Explorers to SF on February 12, 2010

Cartier Exhibit, Legion of Honor Museum

"Cartier and America" covers the “king of jewelers and jeweler to kings” during the Belle Epoque through to the 1960s and 1970s, when Cartier supplied celebrities with their jewels and luxury accessories. The spectacular array of more than 300 objects includes imaginative and creative jewelry of the Gilded Age and Art Deco periods. Marking Cartier’s 100 years in the United States, the exhibition concentrates on pieces owned by Americans, including bracelets worn by Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard, Daisy Fellowes’s famous “Tutti Frutti” necklace, and the exotic flamingo brooch made for the Duchess of Windsor. For the first time, an American museum will feature the personal jewelry of Princess Grace of Monaco from the time of her wedding to Rainier III, including her engagement ring—a 10.47-carat diamond, a grand diamond necklace, and more informal gold brooches.

The more ambitious Explorers may wish to visit the DeYoung after lunch to see the Collection of Amish Quilts This exhibition features approximately 48 full-size and crib quilts dating from the 1880s to the 1940s from various Amish communities in Pennsylvania and the Midwest. A free Docent Tour is offered from 1:30 to 2:20 PM.

Explorers will depart on Friday, February 12 at 9:30 am from the Page Mill Park and Ride. Each individual may choose to rent headphones ($6 members or $7 non-members), tour themselves, or join the free Docent Tour from 11 AM to 11:50. We will lunch at the Legion's Cafe (Dutch). There is a special exhibit surcharge of $10 above the Museum entry fee of $10 for adults, $7 for Seniors. Please RSVP to Carol Carter and advise if you are willing to be a driver and if you intend to stay for the quilt exhibit.
